A car inside the garage at Bleecker Chrysler caught fire early this morning, causing extensive smoke damage and sending the majority of employees to the company's dealership across the street to work. There appears to be no foul play involved.

Robert Bleecker, who owns the dealership, said business will continue as usual, but a few adjustments and shuffling of employees is necessary until everything is secured.

Rodney Eason, deputy fire chief for the Dunn Fire Department, said the fire department received a call from the Dunn Police at 3:21 a.m. today about an alarm activation at the dealership. There were no signs of a break-in.

Dunn firefighters with mutual aid from Erwin, Benson and Plain View fire departments broke down the garage door and entered through the front of the building to extinguish the fire. The fire was out in 20 minutes, Mr. Eason said. The facility, both downstairs and upstairs, suffered smoke damage, he said.

Mr. Eason said they were able to localize the fire. The power has been shut off in the garage. The rest of the dealership has electricity.

Mr. Eason and Harnett County Fire Marshals were on the scene investigating as employees in the service and parts department stood outside, unable to enter the building.

Mr. Bleecker told all employees to go to the other dealership. He said videotape cameras installed a week ago revealed no one started the fire.

Mr. Bleecker said he is waiting for the insurance adjuster to arrive and inspect the damage. Once completed, the front area will be secured, and the night watchman and videotape cameras will provide night security.

“We will leave the watchman here and the cameras are on duty 24 hours a day,” he said.

A salesman, parts department employees and service writers will be on duty at the Chrysler garage, Mr. Bleecker said. Other employees will remain at the Chevrolet dealership.

The situation could have been more serious, he said. But thanks to the quick response of the Dunn Fire Department, the dealership is in operation today, he said.
