GMC Eight-Passenger Crossover Dubbed the "Acadia"...
A concept version of the Acadia will debut in January at the Detroit auto show. The vehicle will hit showrooms as a 2008 model. It will be bigger than the midsize GMC Envoy and will come in front-wheel- and all-wheel-drive versions.
The Acadia is the sister vehicle of the Saturn Outlook crossover , which is due next fall. A Buick version, which will replace the Rendezvous and the Rainier SUVs, has not been named. The General Motors crossovers are set to compete against such vehicles as the Chrysler Pacifica , the Honda Pilot and the Toyota Highlander .
The Oxford Encyclopedic English Dictionary says "Acadia" refers to "a former French colony established in 1604 in the territory now forming Nova Scotia in Canada. French Acadians were deported to other parts of North America, especially Louisiana, where the name has survived as Cajun."
