Accused Swindler in Court...
An accused swindler is back in town, extradited after a conviction for bilking more than a million-and-a-half dollars from people in Arizona. Carroll Carson Sanders now faces theft charges in Carter County, after almost two years on the run.
"East Tennessee Motorsports" closed up shop in January of 2004 and left dozens of customers waiting for car parts and services they never received. Authorities say he swiped nearly 200,000 dollars from Tri-Cities residents, maybe more once several civil court actions are settled.
"He referred to us as dumb country hillbillies, I hope our judge isn't a hillbilly, I hope he gets 8 years." Garry Cole was one of Carroll Carson Sanders' alleged victims...out $12,000 for two trucks that he never received from East Tennessee Motorsports back in 2004.
Adds Cole, "I'm just a common working, everyday working person and it hurts to lose that much money."
Back in court Tuesday Carson Sanders was arraigned on two out-standing warrants more than a year and a half old, and a citation for failure to appear.
It's believed Carson Sanders ran to Mexico for a brief time after leaving the Tri-Cities. He was then captured last winter in New Mexico, working again in auto parts, but under an assumed name.
"There was a certain point there where I'd give up hope," said Tennessee Highway Patrol Special Investigator Dan Bowman. "Leads go very cold, the calls stopped coming, he wasn't interacting with anyone here locally."
The passage of time has changed some things here in downtown Elizabethton. The old East Tennessee Motorsports building is now occupied by a reputable business and at least one of it's victims, Redline Performance Center is also out of business.
The toll in Arizona -- where Carson Sanders has already been convicted -- was much higher, $1.6 million was swiped from victims there.
Still says victim Cole, "what I paid out if he gets 8 years, I'll be glad to lose that much money to see him get 8 years in prison."
